It is always a good time to think about what's important. If you've not yet taken the time to join the National Rifle Association, consider that no other national organization has been as effective at protecting your Second Amendment rights. Neither has there ever been a time when it was more important that we as gun owners and outdoors enthusiasts, regardless of preference, stand together and speak with one voice to protect Liberty. If you haven't seen any of the messages about who the members of the NRA really are, here's a sample:

Show Date: 8/10/2013 - Listen Here
Topics - Ammunition report from NSSF - none of the conspiracy theories were true and manufacturers really are at maximum production. One manufacturer said they're producing over 4 MILLION rounds PER DAY and still are just barely catching up with demand. Huge numbers of guns being purchased, they're all buying ammo for training and practice, and a lot of them never purchased guns before. Buy what you need now, but don't try to build large reserves now - the current demand is still keeping prices much higher than they will be when price begins to drop as inventories increase. NSSF web site has some good info available. Overwhelming numbers of Sheriffs in areas where radical gun control legislation has been passed are standing strong in defending the Constitution, even if it means ignoring or refusing to enforce laws passed in their jurisdictions. Using steel-cased ammunition. New guns available for Try It Before You Buy It. Includes the new DoubleTap pistol. Ruger offering a special through September 2013 - great guns at good prices, plus entry into a raffle for a free gun from Ruger. Number of CHLs issued last quarter exceeded every other quarter, including last quarter which was another new record.
Happy First Birthday, Audrey Pedro (Jeff's granddaughter and miracle child - needed many medical procedures, now doing quite well)!
Gun Violence Messaging Guide - Click to Download 80 pages, 360 KB
Have you ever wondered why the same, tired lies seem to come from every one of the anti-gun activists, or how they jump on every shocking example of violence and dance in the blood of the victims? Download the document linked here and look through it. This may or may not get discussed on the show, but it's such an amazing document that everyone in the Second Amendment community needs to read it. NRA Headquarters - are you listening?
Download a copy then email it to your 2A friends. Why not just share this link? I can't guarantee this file will continue to be available since I have no idea why the original source of the file referenced in the article by Dave Workman is no longer available either. Of course, once something is out, it's going to stay out - just have no idea whether we will be able to keep this link up or not. The more copies that individuals have, the better!

Topics - Moving forward after the verdict in the case against George Zimmerman - according to the jury, it was a case of self-defense. Even though completely unrelated to the Florida case, the media and other anti-gun forces have tried to use it as an argument about "Stand Your Ground" laws. Whether self-defense is justified depends on the totality of the circumstances surrounding the case. Turning and running will have no benefit to the victim in most cases. It is now legal to drive across Illinois while carrying concealed if it is legal to do so in your state as long as you do not exit your vehicle. For Ohio residents, that means you have a CHL. The new Springfield Armory XDS now available in reasonable quantities - come down to SimTrainer to try it out! Winchester AA Tracker shotgun shells - a great way to help diagnose tracking errors for trap and skeet. .

Jeff and Mark predict none of the current proposals will become law. Understanding the facts about gun show and Internet sales - nearly all of those transfers already have background checks! None of the current proposals would have done anything to stop any of the recent mass shootings. PoliceOne.com survey of law enforcement on gun control - overwhelming opposition, and say none of the proposals would affect crime or officer safety. Recertification for second and following renewals of the Concealed Handgun License no longer required.
Show Date: 3/30/2013 - Listen Here
Topics - Surveys say most people support so-called "universal background checks." Most people do not really know what it means, but it sounds good. Criminals will never submit to a background check and will still get firearms illegally, just as they do now. Adding obstacles to private ownership and transfers will not affect criminals nor would they prevent crime. Greatest failing in current system is collecting information on mental health issues. Changes to Ohio firearms law passed last year in HB495 now in effect explained - parking in state-owned garages with firearms permitted, no requirement for recertification for second and following CHL renewals, definition of unloaded changed and improved.
Show Date: 1/5/2013 - Listen Here

The effective date is correct.) SB17 contains no charges specifications for entering a posted facility. House Bill 256 - Constitutional Carry. Accidental open carry, when a wardrobe malfunction exposes a concealed handgun, is not a violation of law but it could draw unwanted attention.

Topics - Discussion regarding last week's shooting in Tucson, AZ. Sadly, the anti-gun crowd lived up to their reputations. Note that it was three civilians, one of whom carried but did not use a concealed handgun, who subdued the shooter. It was several minutes before the police could get there and take over for the citizens who stopped the shooter and held him in custody. Statements by the youngest victim's father stating how this tragedy must not be used to restrict personal liberty. Proposal to restrict possession of firearms within 1000 feet of an elected official, even if possible, would not stop a criminal with evil intent. Nobody argues for limiting any other enumerated rights.
Show Date: 1/8/2011 - Listen Here
Topics - Show dedicated to the memory of Clark County Sheriff Deputy Suzanne Hopper. Reflections on her life and the memorial service. Breaking news of shooting in Tucson, AZ, targeting Representative Gabrielle Giffords. Note that the facts are not yet in (reports of Rep Giffords' death captured in this show have since proven incorrect). Although many will try to get ahead of the investigations and file reports, it is far better to wait until all the facts are in before making conclusions. When some group decides to take the issue and use it for their ends, be very skeptical...ask probing questions, and do not be satisfied with pat answers. Note that current Ohio laws prohibiting carry in a variety of sensitive places only serve to protect criminals, not the law abiding citizens who must enter those places only after being disarmed.

Topics - Special Guest Steve Pierson, defense attorney and show sponsor. When to get an attorney to represent you - earlier is better. If you must defend yourself, call 911 immediately, but make the next call to the attorney who will be defending you. It's difficult to say you're not going to speak to the police, but instead say something to the effect of, "I would like to cooperate, I don't believe I have done anything wrong, but I do have a right to speak with a lawyer and I want to exercise that right." Note that even a police officer involved in a shooting is often advised to speak with a lawyer before addressing the details of the event. Duty to retreat, open carry vs. concealed carry, carry at youth sports events.

The Gun Facts Book - a great reference for sifting facts from myths about firearms.
United States Concealed Carry Association - a great source for information surrounding use of a handgun for personal protection
"We've of course heard the term before, often referring to someone who doesn't get all their facts before answering. But this is a gun show - and you're talking about really shooting from the hip!"Why would anyone be "shooting from the hip" - is it ever appropriate?
Absolutely - it's an advanced skill, one of several handgun techniques variously called instinctive shooting, point shooting, or target-focused shooting, among others. We teach this technique at SimTrainer in our Advanced Handgun Level 5 class - Spontaneous Assault. Done properly, it is remarkably effective out to about 15 feet. However, as with all advanced skills, doing it safely requires proper training and practice. We strongly recommend that people not try this technique for the first time without the supervision of a qualified, experienced instructor.
